Core Skills Occupations List – Impacts on Australian visa system

• From 07 December 2024, the Skills in Demand Visa will be in effect and will replace the Temporary Skill Shortage visa subclass 482. Occupations on the CSOL list will be used as a reference for this Skills in Demand Visa (Core Skills Stream). This means that if you wish to apply for Core Skills Stream of this visa subclass, then your occupation must be on the CSOL list.  

• The CSOL list will also apply to the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme visa subclass 186 (Direct Entry Stream). You must keep this list in mind if you have a plan to study and migrate to Australia.  

The Skills Occupation List Australia consists of 456 occupations that are in high demand in Australia. Below are 5 of the sought-after occupation groups:  

1. Healthcare Professionals

Australia’s healthcare system is world-class, but it is also under constant pressure to meet the needs of its growing population. Consequently, there is a high demand for healthcare professionals, especially in regional areas. Occupations in this category include but not limited to: 

• Doctors (e.g., General Practitioners, Surgery, Specialists): With an aging population, there is a constant need for qualified doctors to deliver essential healthcare services across the country. 

• Nurses (e.g., Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners): Nurses continue to be in high demand, especially those with specialties in areas such as aged care, mental health, and critical care. 

• Dentists: Oral health professionals are needed across Australia, particularly in rural and remote areas where access to dental services can be limited. 

2. Engineering and Trades

Australia’s booming construction industry, combined with infrastructure projects across the country, has resulted in high demand for engineers and tradespeople. Below are examples for occupations in this sector:
