Introduction
The Northern Territory (NT) continues to play a pivotal role in Australia’s General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, offering skilled workers the opportunity to contribute to its thriving regional economy. With its unique lifestyle and abundant career opportunities, the NT is an attractive destination for individuals looking to build a future in Australia.
In this article, we provide key updates for the Northern Territory General Skilled Migration for the 2024–2025 program year, and the exceptions available during the temporary suspension of new applications. If you’re considering migrating to the NT, this guide will equip you with all the essential information you need.
Overview of General Skilled Migration Visas
The Northern Territory nominates two visa subclasses under the General Skilled Migration program:
Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Visa
- Visa duration: Permanent
- Obligations: You need to live and work in the NT for at least 3 years after your visa is granted
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491) Visa
- Visa duration: Five years, with eligibility to apply for permanent residency (Subclass 191) after fulfilling all work and living requirements.
- Obligations: You need to live and work in the regional area (the Northern Territory) for at least 3 years before you can apply for a 191 visa
Key update on Northen Territory General Skilled Migration visas for 2024 – 2025
For the 2024–2025 program year, the Northern Territory Government has received enough applications to fill its allocated nominations. Consequently, the online portal for new applications was temporarily suspended on 10 January 2025. The General Skilled Migration program will reopen once the NT Government receives the allocation numbers for the 2025–2026 round.
Important Note: Applications submitted before 10 January 2025 will still be assessed, and nominations will be granted to applicants who meet all requirements.
Exceptions during the suspension period
In exceptional circumstances, new applications for NT Skilled Migration Visas for 2024–2025 may still be accepted. These exceptions apply to onshore applicants who meet one of the following criteria:
- Their current visa will expire before 1 July 2025, and they are ineligible for a Subclass 485 visa.
- They are at risk of losing eligibility for the GSM program before 1 July 2025 due to age-related factors, such as turning 45 or losing points for age, which could reduce their total migration score below 65.
Important Note: Meeting the above criteria does not guarantee that the nomination will be finalised before the visa expiration date.
