Employer Sponsored Visa Subclasses
Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)
186 sponsorship visa is a permanent visa that allows you to stay infinitively in Australia. You must work for your employer who sponsors you for at least 2 years after the visa is granted.
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 494)
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa is a temporary visa for skilled workers who are sponsored by a company in a regional area in Australia. The duration of this visa is up to 5 years, but the good things is that you can apply for a permanent visa (subclass 191) after working and living in a regional area for 3 years.
Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)
482 sponsorship visa is a temporary visa that allows you to stay from 1 year to 4 years in Australia, depending on your 482-visa stream. However, you can have a chance to apply for a permanent visa while in a 482 visa.
Generally, under this visa, you can only work for the sponsored company or its associated entity and only in your nominated occupation. If you wish to change your occupation, you must have a new nomination.
Training Visa (Subclass 407)
Training Visa (Subclass 407) is a temporary visa, allowing you to stay up to 2 years in Australia in order to complete a workplace-based training. You must have an employer/organisation who is sponsoring you for the training to be eligible for this visa.
Employer Sponsorship Australia Visa Requirements
As indicated by the name of employment sponsorship visas, you must have an employer who agrees to hire, sponsor and nominate you to an occupation in their company/organisation. In addition to the sponsorship, you also need to meet other requirements. Each employment sponsorship visa subclass will have specific requirements, but generally, you are required to have:
- Sponsoring employer: who sponsored and nominated you to a position in his/her company.
- Occupation: Your occupation needs to be in the medium and long term strategic occupation list. In case your occupation lies on the short-term occupation list, then you can apply for a visa 482 – short-term stream.

- Skill assessment: One of the criteria to apply for a visa 186 (Direct Entry) and visa 494 is that you need to have a positive skill assessment for the occupation you are nominated for.
- English proficiency: While visa 482 requires an IELTS overal 5.0 (no band score under 4.5), visas 186 and 494 require an IELTS overal 6.0 (no band score under 6.0).

Why should you apply for an Employment Sponsored Visa in the financial year 2024-2025?
482 Visa:
- The experience requirement was reduced from 2 years to 1 year only, implemented from 23 November 2024. If you have enough 1 year experience by 23 November 2024, then a 482 visa is a good option for you.
- The English requirement for a 482 visa was reduced to overal IELTS 5.0 only.
Employer Sponsored Visa Quota for the 2024-2025 financial year:
- Australian Government is encouraging people to apply for an employer sponsored visa as it can ensure that you are likely to be employed during the duration of your visa.
- The quota for an Employer Sponsored visa increases by 7,175 seats for the 2024-2025 financial year. This means that there will be additional 7,175 seats allocated for this kind of visa, compared to last year.
